Pearls as a Gift: Weddings, the 30th Anniversary and June

Few pieces of jewellery are as closely tied to the milestones of a life as the pearl. It rests at the bride's throat on her wedding day, it gives the 30th year of marriage its name, and since 1912 it has been the birthstone of June. Anyone who wants to give pearls therefore needs less inspiration than orientation: which type of pearl, which size and which price bracket belong to which occasion.

Why the pearl is the gift for life's transitions

Pearls grow slowly. Depending on the type, a cultured pearl needs one to several years in the water before the nacre, the layered shell of aragonite and conchiolin around the nucleus, is thick enough for a deep lustre. This slowness makes it a symbol of everything meant to last: a marriage, a coming of age, a company. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) records that pearls were traditionally given as wedding gifts and stand for purity and modesty.

At the same time, pearls are soft. At 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, which ranks the scratch hardness of minerals in ten steps, they sit far below diamond or sapphire. Whoever gives pearls also gives a duty of care, described under pearl care and storage. For a gift, that means: better a smaller pearl with thick nacre than a large one with a thin coating.

For the wedding: the bride and the Akoya

The classic bridal gift is a strand of Japanese Akoya cultured pearls of 7 to 7.5 mm in diameter and 45 cm in length, known in the trade as princess length. Akoya pearls come from the oyster Pinctada fucata, are almost always round, white to cream with a rosé or silvery overtone, and have the sharpest lustre of all cultured pearls. A German jeweller lists this combination with a 14 carat (585) gold clasp at 999 euros, and with white gold and six diamonds at 1,499 euros. The spread comes from the clasp, the lustre and the surface cleanliness, not from the size.

How common pearls really are on the wedding day is shown by a consumer survey from the Cultured Pearl Association of America, published by the Plumb Club: 21 per cent of jewellery buyers named pearls as their choice of bridal jewellery, among 25 to 35 year olds it was 27 to 28 per cent, and among 46 to 55 year olds only 11 to 14 per cent. The younger generation reaches for pearls more often than their mothers did. According to the same survey, 66 per cent of all jewellery buyers own at least one piece of pearl jewellery, and 65 per cent of pearl owners have an heirloom in the box. Pearls are the gift most likely to be passed on.

The pearl anniversary: 30 years, 30 pearls

In the German-speaking world the 30th wedding anniversary is called the Perlenhochzeit, the pearl wedding, as listed in the Wikipedia overview of wedding anniversaries, which draws on the Society for the German Language. The traditional gift is a strand of 30 pearls, one for each year of marriage. A wedding magazine describes the variant with pearls of different sizes, standing for the highs and lows the couple have weathered together, and the custom of throwing a pearl into the water together on the day of the pearl anniversary so that the marriage continues to hold.

Thirty pearls of 10 mm add up to just over 30 cm of pearls, so the necklace is usually made with spacer links or set on a gold chain. South Sea pearls from Australia, white to silvery, 10 to 12 mm, suit this well, as do Tahitian pearls from French Polynesia in anthracite, grey and green. Both types stay longer in the water, have thick nacre and do not look dull even after decades. Anyone who does not want to buy everything at once can have the strand extended year by year as an add-a-pearl necklace.

As a guide to prices: stud earrings with South Sea pearls of 9 to 10 mm, AAA quality, in 18 carat (750) gold cost 1,279 euros at a specialist dealer, and the same size in Tahitian at 399 euros in 14 carat (585) gold. Birthstone of June since 1912

That the pearl belongs to June is not an ancient tradition but a trade association decision. In 1912 the National Association of Jewelers in the United States, today's Jewelers of America, published a list of modern birthstones that remains the basis of most birthstone charts to this day. For June, the pearl was on it. Moonstone and alexandrite were added later; the GIA now names all three as June stones.

The GIA sums up the meaning of the June stone in the words sweet simplicity. For a birthday gift, that is a good brief: a pendant, a pair of studs, no grand collier. Freshwater pearls of 8 to 9 mm or a single Akoya of 7.5 to 8 mm on a fine gold chain strike the right note. Anyone who knows the recipient likes colour chooses a freshwater pearl in rosé or lavender; these are natural tones of that type. The types are compared under Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian or freshwater.

Confirmation, First Communion and the 18th birthday

In many families the first pearl of a lifetime comes at confirmation or First Communion, and in Austria also at Firmung or the 18th birthday. A Viennese jeweller runs a dedicated line under the name Meine erste Perle, my first pearl, with pearls of 3 to 6 mm, intended for Firmung, school leaving or the 18th birthday. The idea behind it: a piece of jewellery that grows with the wearer, to which further pearls can be added later, and which is not out of fashion after two years. Delicate studs of 6 to 7 mm or a pendant with a single pearl are the rule; a full strand is rarely the right thing for a 14 year old.

Freshwater pearls are the sensible choice for this occasion. They consist almost entirely of nacre because they are cultured without a bead nucleus, and they forgive scratches better than an Akoya with a thin coating. A German pearl dealer lists confirmation jewellery in freshwater cultured pearls of 4 to 10 mm in sterling (925) silver or 14 carat (585) gold at 72.95 to 339 euros.

Work anniversaries and business partners

For employees in Germany, it is not taste that sets the limit but the tax office. Non-cash gifts for a special personal occasion remain tax-free up to 60 euros gross, as laid down in R 19.6 of the German wage tax guidelines. Qualifying occasions expressly include a wedding, a silver or golden wedding anniversary, a child's confirmation and a milestone employee anniversary; a company anniversary does not count. It is a threshold, not an allowance: if the gift comes to 60.01 euros, the entire amount becomes taxable. Cash gifts are excluded regardless of the amount.

Simple freshwater studs of 7 to 8 mm on silver posts stay within this limit; a jewellery dealer on the Baltic coast lists such a pair in rhodium-plated sterling silver at 29 euros. Gifts to business partners fall under a different rule: the deduction as a business expense is capped under Section 4 (5) No. 1 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) at 50 euros per recipient per year, since 2024, having been 35 euros before that. This too is a threshold, and several gifts to the same person in the same year are added together. A more valuable gift for a milestone company anniversary remains permitted, only the deduction is lost; Tahitian studs in 14 carat (585) gold from 399 euros suit that case. For a 25th work anniversary above the 60 euro mark, the accounts department can tax the value at a flat rate under Section 37b EStG.

What else counts when buying

A gift meant to last for decades deserves a check of the basics. Grades such as AAA or AA are dealer labels with no uniform standard; a GIA report instead assesses seven characteristics, including lustre, surface and nacre quality. For a necklace worn daily, a safety clasp in 14 or 18 carat gold is worth the outlay. And pearls belong in a fabric pouch, not an airtight bag, because the nacre needs moisture from the air.

The cultured pearl itself has a date: in 1893 Kokichi Mikimoto produced the first cultured pearl in Japan, and his declared wish was to adorn the necks of all the women in the world with pearls. Since then there has been a real pearl for every occasion and every budget. It only has to suit the person, not the price tag.
